Map Blog Post

Native American Tribes in North America, c. 1500

Our map is a map of Native American tribes and major products in the 1500's. There were many, many tribes, as well as products like fish, maize, and wild game. We got to see the densities of populations and where crops grew best and where some of these exotic animals lived. We created this to portray what life was like before the Europeans came to the Americas and how the land was being used pre-colonization.

Our topic is a map about the types of crops as well as the tribes that are found in America, circa 1500. I see a larger density of tribes are near the water, and it means that large bodies of water made doing everyday things a lot easier. I see that many tribes caught fish near the ocean, and it means that they had the technology to be able to fish, as well as be able to support a community with the fish that they caught. I see a lesser density of tribes near the Canadian border, and this means that the people did not want to deal with the constant coldness, so they chose to live farther south. I also see less tribes in the center of the United States, which means that it would have been a lot harder to survive off natural resources there instead of the coastline. Lastly, we see maize that is grown in the southern parts of the United States and in Mexico, which means that it needs a warmer climate to grow.

PSA Script

Louis is a modern day slavery activist that works with enslaved woman in the Washington D.C. Area. Louis does not get paid for his work. He does it because he's a good person and he knows what it feels how these people suffer because he lived in Cambodia as a child and was treated poorly as well. Louis has spent tons of money and decreased relationship statuses with people that he knows to help these poor women in need. 35% of the freed slaves in the US have been freed by independent workers like Louis. He started his impact when he saw Cameroonians forced to work in a store one Thanksgiving day. He met one girl and took her free. She helped him get in contact with the other girls working there and got them free as well. He let some of these girls stay at his home until they were stable enough to live on their own. What Louis has done for these girls, has not only affected their lives, but has inspired many, many people to attempt to do what Louis does to free slaves today.

Sarah

Sarah was a young, beautiful woman who boarded a slave ship called the Hudibras in 1785. Everyone stood in awe as she boarded the ship, like she was one of the most beautiful people they had ever seen. Besides her beautiful appearance, she was talented singer and dancer. She was given the name Sarah because Sarah is a biblical figure who is a princess, the beautiful wife of Abraham.  All of these qualities lead to her being a favorite on the ship, which the captain chose. This means she was given more favors than the rest of the slaves on the ship. She eventually became close to the captain which lead to some issues. As she was coming close to the captains and sailors, the slaves planned a revolt. Sailors found out about this and eventually the plan was shot down and the slaves were punished. She was blamed for giving tools to the slaves so they could break out of their shackles. Surprisingly, she was not punished and was eventually sold in Grenada to become a slave.

Evidence or resistance is the plan the revolt that was planned that somehow involved her. The slaves planned a revolt against the ship’s captain and sailors, but the slaves were stopped. Cruel punishments were given to the slaves, but Sarah was blamed for this revolt as well. She was blamed for handing out tools to the slaves so their shackles could be broken. She received no punishment for these acts, most likely because they were accusations and not confirmed truth.

I learned that the slaves were treated awfully, no matter what they did. They were often blamed for what they didn't do and they lived troubling lives. Even when favorites were chosen, they were blamed for any confusion. When the slaves did do something wrong blood was often spilled and they were badly hurt or in a lot of pain.
